10 QUESTIONS WITH TALANJE NATASHA

Talanje is a 24  year old video and comic artist from Nairobi, Kenya. She debuted her magazine “Instincts” in November of 2022, which included comic illustrations and short stories by Talanje herself. The second issue, which highlights art and stories from female artists, is set to be released soon. With the theme “Ignorance is Bliss” and seven artists contributing to the issue, we cannot wait to see what Talanje has in store for this upcoming issue and the future of “Instincts.”

In honor of this issue, we got together with Talanje to ask her 10 questions:

When and how did your creative journey start?

My creative journey started with the ‘Interstellarr:5555’ animated movie made for Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery’ album. The combination of music and animation blew my little mind away. I was so obsessed, I knew the exact time they would play the ‘Digital Love’ video on TV, and I was fueled every morning by the ‘One More Time.’ on the radio. Maybe it’s a generational thing (because I’ve met a lot of artists who have credited that album as one of their creative pillars.) It’s an awesome moment:  finding something that makes you want to dance and cry at the same time. And so, my exploration began.

Do you remember when you realized that you wanted to spend your life being an artist?

That’s a tricky one. When I was 5 I could draw a giraffe better than anyone in my class. Maybe it gave me a bit of an ego to be called ‘talented.’ I was always drawing and writing because they are what brought me joy. I tried other activities but I always naturally had a special connection towards art. Career-wise, it may have been an act of rebellion in affirming who I was, in an attempt to boycott the more socially acceptable routine. That was my affirming moment.

How do you get into the creative zone?

I like sitting by places with a nice view. I open a window and light a candle - I enjoy moving air. Choosing the perfect playlist is always key. A nice cup of tea is great - if I’m on a deadline, coffee. I put my phone away as well.

What are the most obscure places you look for inspiration?

River banks ad beaches.

What advice do you have for other artists?

Get comfortable with your intuition. Trust your instincts.

Is there a cause that you’re passionate about?

Know your rights campaign.

Dream sesh circle?

CYGN, Wanda Sykes and Cleo Sol.

What are you bringing to the sesh? (sesh must haves)

A pen, rolling paper and a matchbox.

What media do you have on rotation right now? (music, movies/shows, podcasts)

Music: sugarplant’s album - Dryfruit

Shows: Daria, Hell’s Paradise.

Podcast: Lemme Land Podcast.
